Martin's Farmstand:  Rain!


It is raining!!! This is wonderful as without rain we would not grow food. Here we have had about 15% of the normal rainfall in April and May. I had used about half of the water in the pond already. I have never seen it this dry in May before. So if you are going to complain about the rain today- You probably should not complain to a produce farmer.
We have piles of green onions. The cucumbers and tomatoes are getting more plenty. It is still asparagus season yet. I will be stopping the asparagus harvest soon as the plants have been stressed by the heat and drought. The strawberries look dismal but I do see some sizing fruit and the later flowers are blooming and look nice. The beets, chard and field lettuce all look good and will be on the stand soon. And do pause for a moment to thank God for giving us rain. Daniel

Market News

Looks like we’re going to get both hot muggy days and scattered rain this week, a sure sign that summer is here even if the calendar doesn’t want to admit it yet. I picked the first summer squash out of my garden today (from a plant that was a seedling I got at ALG just a few weeks ago), and our growers are well ahead of me with the summer-time bounty.

You’ll be seeing the variety of products at ALG increase some in the coming weeks. I’ve been reaching out to growers who can add to products that are in short supply, such as a cheese maker in Morgan county, pastured chicken producers in Barrow and Banks counties, a no-chem fruit orchard in North Georgia, and other similar growers. Many of them sell at other Locally Grown markets, and they’re eager to supplement what we’re already getting from our long-time ALG growers. I’ll try to point them out as they come online here.

Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market from the Athens Land Trust is open Saturday mornings and their farm stand is open Tuesday afternoons. They have a website too. A new Athens Sunday market has opened up at the Classic Center, every Sunday from 11 to 4 now through October. They have a website here: http://www.sundaycentermarket.com. The Comer Farmers Market is open in downtown Comer on Saturday mornings. The Oconee County farmers market is open Saturday mornings in front of the Oconee County Courthouse in Watkinsville. The Shields Ethridge Cultivator Market is held monthly in Jefferson. If you know of any markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

The rain has really helped to replenish the moisture in the ground, but it always seems to slow down the planting when the fields are left muddy. Hopefully the next few sunny days will help to dry it out and get the asparagus going again.

Forest Run Farm has some beautiful plants for sale: tomatoes, peppers, kale, etc. All $3 plants and 4 packs are buy 5 and get 8- 8 for $15. They are also offering 2 varieties of paste tomatoes, Roma and Amish Paste as a plug. Normally they are .25 each, but this week buy 8 and get 12 – 12 for $2. They will also have greens available like head lettuce, chard, kale and spinach. Bilko cabbage, radish, hakuri turnips and herbs.

Rusty Dog Coffee is available in medium and dark roast, fresh ground or whole bean. It’s roasted right here in Madison and can be delivered most weeks. Bauman’s Meat is listed but not available for delivery this week. Start planning your order.

Recipes

Kohlrabi Slaw
serves 2

3 medium kohlrabi, peeled, stems trimmed off, grated
1/3 purple cabbage, shredded
2 carrots, grated
1/2 red onion, grated
1/4 cup golden raisins
1 tbsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tbsp cider vinegar
4 tbsp chopped cilantro
1/4 cup mayonnaise (or more, if you prefer)

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Chill for several hours before serving.

Market News

Hello!

It’s been a warm and rainy week on the farms. Everything is growing – especially the weeds! The spring crops are enjoying the relatively cooler temperatures, and we have a nice selection of greens and lettuces for you this week. It is also high time for that ephemeral spring treat – garlic scapes! These are the flowering stalk of the garlic plant, which we remove to encourage the plant to put its energy into a larger bulb rather than a flower. These are edible, with a delicious mild garlic flavor. They can be used similar to scallions, or sauteed like garlic. If you haven’t tried them yet, now is the week!

The strawberries are done for the season – sure was short but sweet! We will continue to have The Peach Truck set up next to us, and these also go great with Dozen Bakery’s brown sugar shortcakes!

The Bloomy Rind has a fun selection of goodies up this week, so be sure to check them out!

We know you have many options these days when shopping for produce. Please remember, one of the best ways you can support local farmers is to EAT MORE VEGETABLES!

Northeast Georgia Locally Grown:  Locally Grown - Availability for June 3rd , 2015


Hey Local Food Lovers,

Before a quick snippet about continuing food adventures back in Taiwan this week I want to mention that the Georgia Mountains Farm Tour is fast approaching. It’s less than a month away on June 27-28th. If you are curious what the farms look like that you order food from every week here at Locally Grown, this is the best opportunity of the year to go out and meet these farmers in person. This year we are also adding a few Crop Mobs in advance of the event to help farmers prepare for the event and get caught up on farm chores during this busy time of year. Don’t forget to add these items to your cart this week (the Crop Mob actually earns you a discount to the TOUR).

Back here in Taiwan (our brief jaunt to Japan ended last week) we’ve been slowly making the rounds to eat all the best food that is well known in Taiwan. A few of my favorites are guo bao, which is a steamed rice bun wrapped around pork bellies that have been soaking in a delicious sauce for a day or more, then sprinkled with cilantro and a ground peanut sauce. It’s one of my favorites. I have to admit that my wife can make a better version of this back home using O’hana’s pork belly. Lucky me!

Shalom bao is another favorite, consisting of another type of steamed rice bun with ground juicy pork in the center. This is eaten with seaweed and an egg soaked in soy sauce on the side.

By far the most extravagant way to eat in Taiwan is a Taiwan banquet. Imagine an enormous lazy susan with a new dish brought out every 5 minutes or so. This is a family gathering way to eat. It started with Sashimi sushi, every bit as good as what I had in Japan, but more ornately delivered. Then fried soft shelled crab. An amazing fish soup with delicate rice noodles. The fish had been fried before being added to the soup. Stinky tofu I’ll skip. Not many Americans would go for that one. Another fish dish! Then some great little fried cakes with sweet potato and taro in each layer. Slices of orange to finish it off.

Well, I’ll have to get into more details in my final post next week.

I am delighted to see The Harvest getting new vendors and more item choices on a weekly basis. Let me take a moment to welcome Bramberi Farm to The Market . They are Certified Naturally Grown farmers focusing on fruits, primarily naturally grown berries. Their *Easpberries were quite tasty and they will have other berries available in the coming week.

Let’s all mention Tom’s Awesome Seafood whose Georgia White Shrimp sold out last week! We had some and it was fabuloso!

Leilani’s is also expecting to add Cabbage to several varieties of Lettuce, Carrots, Bok choi, Turnips and Kale this week. And I’m also going to mention the “T” word. We should start to have real quantities of our favorite veggie in the next couple of weeks.

The Wednesday Market:  It's Summer! Time to Order


Good afternoon on this fine Sunday! The sun is shining for now on this last day of May. I hope you all have a chance to get out and enjoy it before the rain begins.

The Wednesday Market is open for orders. Please place your orders by Monday at 10 p.m. Orders are ready for pick up between 3 and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, in our NEW location on Adams Street. All the kids are out of school, and summer is officially here. Ah, summertime – when the days are longer and the living is easy! This is my favorite time of the year, and I love the cobalt blue skies and fluffy white clouds, bees buzzing, and flowers blooming. Summer produces some of my favorite edibles, too – tomatoes, watermelon, peaches, cucumbers, summer squash and basil, to name a few.

Here is a sandwich idea to try this summer. Take a pita bread and slice it in half so you get two pockets. Lightly apply mayo, mustard, or condiment of your choice to the inside of each bread pocket. Lightly sauté half of a chopped onion and half of a bell pepper in a bit of butter or olive oil. Once the vegetables have softened, fill each pocket with some of the mixture. Sprinkle with a little dried basil, oregano, or freshly ground black pepper and add a slice or two of mozzarella. Heat underneath a broiler, just until the bread crisps and the cheese melts. It doesn’t take long; be careful that you don’t burn the bread. This makes enough for two sandwiches. Enjoy!

For those of you who haven’t yet been to our new location, here are some directions, from our original location on Concord Street (Highway 18). Turn right onto Adams Street across from the Zebulon First Baptist Church, go past the Board of Education on the right, and past the old Zebulon Elementary school and bus garage on the left. The new location is the next driveway on the left, a little bungalow style house (it’s the only house on that side of Adams Street). If you are coming from Griffin, you can turn right on Dunn Street, just past the main branch of United Bank. When Dunn Street ends, turn left, and the Market is on the right.
